Turtle

"Imagine that the whole earth was covered with water, and a man was to throw a yoke with a hole in it into the water. Blown by the wind, that yoke would drift north, south, east and west. Now, suppose that once in hundred years a blind turtle would rise to the surface. What do you think? Would that turtle put his head through the hole in the yoke as he rose to the surface once in a hundred years?"

"It is unlikely Lord."

"Well, it is just as unlikely that one will be born as a human being; it is just unlikely that a Tathagata, a Noble One, a fully enlightened Buddha should arise in the world; and it is just as unlikely that the Dhamma and discipline of the Tathagata should be taught. But now you have been born as a human being, a Tathagata has arisen and the Dhamma has been taught. Therefore, strive to realize the Four Noble Truths."

Candles and Light

Somehow has always been fascinated by candles and light, after coming across a quote by Helen Keller in my secondary school days.

If you're in the dark,
light your candle from mine.
It will bring you light,
and it doesn't diminish mine in any way.

Since then I've accumulated quite a lot of candle-darkness-light related quotes... but there's always the first in everything...

My first song on this subject would be "A Light in the Darkness" by The Wayfarers, based on a poem by Ven Sujiva.

A light in the darkness is a gift we must always remember.
A light in the darkness is a gift we must always remember.
Its flame burns to comfort lost feeling.
Its flame burns to comfort lost feeling.

A light in the darkness can be seen from afar,
Burn of fire for the comfort of many.
A light in the darkness can be seen from afar,
Burn on fire for the confort of many.

If you have no light in your heart
Find one, light one.
If you have a light already burning
Let it burn, let it burn.
Let it burn, let it burn
Let it burn, let it burn
Let it burn, let it burn
With greater glory by sharing with others.

My father had also passed a few booklets from his school's (which was also my secondary school) Christian Fellowship annual (whatever gathering) to bless students in their final exams. He has to attend all these functions held in the school hall, being the only male teacher he was in charge of the PA system. For whatever reason he had kept those booklets, I do not know, probably he likes the "poem-like" words of songs and prayers inside, just like me when I received those "small little treasures" from him..

So.. here's one of those songs in the booklet, I later went to look for the midi, it sounds cute and like a children song, maybe because it's a midi...

Brighten the Corner Where You Are
Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,
Do not wait to shed your light afar,
To the many duties ever near you now be true,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Brighten the corner where you are!
Brighten the corner where you are!
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
Brighten the corner where you are!

Just above are clouded skies that you may help to clear,
Let not narrow self your way debar;
Though into one heart alone may fall your song of cheer,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Here for all your talent you may surely find a need,
Here reflect the bright and Morning Star;
Even from your humble hand the Bread of Life may feed,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Now... I just found this Go Light Your World by Kathy Tracolli. Found it as I was searching for The Chirstmas Shoes song...

Go Light Your World
There is a candle in every soul
Some brightly burning, some dark and cold
There is a Spirit who brings a fire
Ignites a candle and makes His home

So carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
And hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

Frustrated brother, see how he's tried to
Light his own candle some other way
See now your sister, she's been robbed and lied to
Still holds a candle without a flame

So carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the lonely, the tired and worn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

'Cause we are a family whose hearts are blazing
So let's raise our candles and light up the sky
Praying to our Father, in the name of Jesus
Make us a beacon in darkest times

So carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, deceived and poor
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world

Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world
