Turtle

"Imagine that the whole earth was covered with water, and a man was to throw a yoke with a hole in it into the water. Blown by the wind, that yoke would drift north, south, east and west. Now, suppose that once in hundred years a blind turtle would rise to the surface. What do you think? Would that turtle put his head through the hole in the yoke as he rose to the surface once in a hundred years?"

"It is unlikely Lord."

"Well, it is just as unlikely that one will be born as a human being; it is just unlikely that a Tathagata, a Noble One, a fully enlightened Buddha should arise in the world; and it is just as unlikely that the Dhamma and discipline of the Tathagata should be taught. But now you have been born as a human being, a Tathagata has arisen and the Dhamma has been taught. Therefore, strive to realize the Four Noble Truths."

Life Is That Easy!

The best thing I've heard yesterday... although I like the phrase, I can't really elaborate on it as well as mj...

Anyway...life doesn't have to be made difficult. Most problems appear because I fear something, or I wish for something... although I am not enlightened enough to get rid of all these feelings and perceptions and expectations, at least I note how I feel... still a long long way to go to make "life is that easy"...

my three years BA course is not a waste

I've heard so many people saying they do not apply what they learned from their varsity days (as in formal education syllabus) in their work. Yet for me, indirectly all the management and marketing theories have been very useful... I mean when you work in an organization and POLCS (planning, organizing, leading, controlling, staffing) are the basic functions, how much can you run from Business Admin? I even find myself searching for text books... phew.. good thing I decided to buy my most of my textbooks from second year onwards, cost me RM60++ per book but.. because I took out the money, I treasured what I bought, I did refer to my textbooks and then I kept it because "mm seh tak" to throw it away... now it's function truely magnifies.. bad thing is I gave away my photostated textbooks... :(

Who would have thought there's a need to refer to the symbols used in flow charts, so that the flow chart looks proper instead of putting in what you thought is the process when there's so many other crucial classification of the different stages in a simple process flow. I even referred to HR textbook because I need to write my own JD.. and I thought that HR would be of no use after I took it in my first semester in uni. I gave away my costing book, and that is costing me now... as I'm supposed to do some cost-benefit analysis.. can do but would have been better if there's a textbook to refer to...

Just a few examples... well... I've spent my time well in uni... studied quite hard and played a bit as well... advice to students (I dont' think there are any students reading my blog though)... most certainly there's a way to apply what you have studied.. if it's not the actual knowledge.. the next best thing to learn is attitude... how you take things whether you like it or not, you still have to do it... blah blah blah... twist your thinking a bit and everything would be of use... nothing is ever wasted...

Another example on twisting your mind from a GM who conducted a session in the training I went to not long after I join the organization... wow... he's a GM and he gave us almost 3 hours, and most of us are fresh grads.. back to what he said:
1. we are getting a free scholarship when we work... the key is to ask, ask, ask... the scholarship is ours to take, the only reason deterring us from getting the scholarship is our own attitude
2. in life nothing is good or bad, you can sell anything if you know how to put things in a different way. e.g. : your objective is to get the client to transit at singpore, and the client is rich.
Option 1: you tell the client he can fly to Australia for RM5000 without transit OR for RM4500 with transit at Singapore. Assuming he is quite rich, he would probably just pay the RM500 and save the trouble of transit.
Option 2: You change your marketing strategy. he pays RM5000 whether he transits or not BUT if he transit at singapore he gets free gift worth RM500

So... he would probably have chosen the transit option for the free gift, despite the hidden fact he's actually paying his own gift, for the hassle he took to transit.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way

Was talking to a guy friend, considered my oldest guy friend as I don't really keep in touch with those I met earlier. Not to say we are really such close friends as we don't see each other often. But he's a good friend in prompting me to say some of the things that I seldom discuss with other people, especially with guys.

The conversation tonight brought me back to some of the things that happened in my life, which probably had left quite a huge impact on who I am today, and reminded me of some of the lessons learned the hard way. Again, not to say they were exactly hard lessons, just some regrets thrown in as well, and yet, things had already passed and I had taken the lessons and moved on... hm, I'm kind of contradicting myself here... saying that I regret things and saying I had moved on... so does that mean I had moved on? To me, I think so, unless there are counter-arguments that say when you move on you don't regret things anymore?

Which brings me to another quote by MH, she said it in Chinese but I can't remember the exact words, but the essence of it is something like this "in life there surely must be some regrets"... ahh... I guess sometimes when you think about regrets you will realise you have actually grown because of it... hard lessons usually are very good teachers...

Now suddenly I got the urge to analyse myself again... along the years I have actually taken risks when I can, I judge a lot of things as risky anyway, things not done in the conventional way would be considered risky, and somehow seems exciting and adventurous to me, which encouraged me to try it (you would be surprised what I had tried before, and what I still think I would like to try, I am not the goody-goody girl you see at religious gathering!). Most have turned out to be good, and yet some like what I talked about today, might not be that good but left me a more informed person of the real world out there.

Don't know why I suddenly feel quite old/matured because can see things from more perspectives, looking back at who I was back in secondary school days... I am quite different now... I am getting long winded, and I haven't been writing like this for a long long time... and this is exactly the way I would have written to this guy friend of mine... very philosophical kind of things... which surprisingly, he would replied! But his replies always came months later... haha... and he never remembered what he told me, well... doesn't matter anyway... as long as I can remember... hehe... and he said it's dangerous to tell me things because I remember everything!

Well, he's really one of a kind friend... hmm... and with all my other friends, they are also one of a kind... tell me someone's name and I would have a picture of that person in my mind (as in attitude/behaviour/personality) and no two friends would share the same picture... so it's kinda interesting... which reminds me I should treasure all my friends even more...

This week, I ran into 3 friends at LRT: one ex-roommate, one ex-collegemate and one ex-secondary school mate. And had received a call from an old collegue, made a call to my lecturer, made a call to someone in the government department I had worked with and admired very much for her work integrity, got a suggestion by an old friend since primary school to go to temple, met an old friend online from primary school, saw a ex-secondary school mate but didn't say "hi" to her cause wasn't sure it's her (later found out it should have been her) .. in short... met so many old acquaintances that I feel that my life has been quite "rich". I do not need to be popular as in someone who have lots of friends... but simply having a few good friends and keeping in good terms with the rest.. wow... what a difference such circle of acquaintances could make to one's life...

Ahh.. thanks MT for the long 3 hours plus conversation... (I use the initial you would probably always use but I would seldom use, as I would call you by another name... well... for blogging purpose it's sometimes better to be a bit secretive and mysterious!)

Don't know whether MT is reading this... I have told him a lot of things but there are also things you just have to bring to the grave... Why? Probably cause I am still growing up... and when you are still immature about some things you would never mention them to the other people...

1.5 months

I'm 1.5 months old in the banking industry and I find that I am comparing things to the banking products. I realise I used the word "incentive" some time ago to quote something on "is it enough incentive/motivation to prompt people to do something?" then today when NS mentioned "membership" my mind went to credit card and the tie-ups with partners/different channels for discounts...

1.5 months without internet access, without computer games at work, and haven't been talking that much at work... so you can imagine what I actually did at work the first few weeks... read and read and read as I browsed the public folder, and read newspaper just to write a one page summary on our Malaysian economy and banking industry for the month.

Now not so much time to read already, I have been so free I kept asking my manager now and then for something to do, so now I got my share of things to follow up... Anyway, I know how much I know when I know how to explain what is collateral, guarantor, unsecured, daily rest, monthly rest, etc to my new colleague... Not bad for a newbie like me... hehe... sometimes need to praise myself a bit!

I talk in crochets

I speak too "evenly".. as if speaking in all crochets, and I need to add some quavers, semiquavers, dotted notes, rests, etc. to my speech... What an interesting way to quote someone who speak without rhythm... same would go if i speak monotonously, I would be speaking in one pitch...

Before this, things that I need to do: put more weight to my voice, speak in a "colour"... ahem... somehow never really started to practise all these things seriously... and today, another exercise: hold my breath for sixty seconds, then I'll learn to gain control over myself...
