Turtle

"Imagine that the whole earth was covered with water, and a man was to throw a yoke with a hole in it into the water. Blown by the wind, that yoke would drift north, south, east and west. Now, suppose that once in hundred years a blind turtle would rise to the surface. What do you think? Would that turtle put his head through the hole in the yoke as he rose to the surface once in a hundred years?"

"It is unlikely Lord."

"Well, it is just as unlikely that one will be born as a human being; it is just unlikely that a Tathagata, a Noble One, a fully enlightened Buddha should arise in the world; and it is just as unlikely that the Dhamma and discipline of the Tathagata should be taught. But now you have been born as a human being, a Tathagata has arisen and the Dhamma has been taught. Therefore, strive to realize the Four Noble Truths."

human nature

8th July - I deleted the original post... good things should be written on the stone and bad things should be written on the sand... so after putting it up for a week, it's time to take it down and let go... :)

more on uvula

more to digest...

http://www.vocalist.org/group/vocalist-temporary/message/4584.html
"If the tongue is high, the sound becomes nasal and twangy."
"If the uvula is high and the tongue, too, is high, the sound is both
breathy and nasal. But as long as the tongue is low and"( he uses an icon plus the word shaped to mean the tongue is concave ) "and the uvula is low and relaxed, the sound- although it may feel nasal because it is a new experience- is resonant.."

http://www.innerbody.com/text/dige02.html
Contrary to the depictions seen in cartoons, the uvula does not vibrate during singing and shouting and, in fact, has nothing to do with the voice.
???

And one more just to laugh about...

lift the uvula?

First time in my life I heard of this "uvula" word, the whole night been figuring how to lift that thing?

trying to google for it brought me to this page: http://www.crmav.com/fo/forums/52/52461091771774.html "She asks me to make sure I'm using my mouth, not my throat to lift the uvula."this makes it worse... i was using my throat...

According to http://www.limetea.net/singing.html,

"OK, eez better! Now you must leeft-- how you say…" He pointed to his gaping mouth.

"Lift the mouth?" I suggested.

"No! Inside!"

"Lift the tongue?"

"No! Back! Ze leetle one!" He wiggled his finger like he was stirring a martini.

"The uvula?"

"Yes! Zis one! Leeft him up!"

Lift the uvula? He might as well have asked me to flex my pancreas. Nonetheless, I peered into the tarnished mirror on the brick wall of the studio and experimented with contorting muscles in my neck, throat, forehead, shoulders-- nothing seemed to work.

"It's impossible." I whined. "I can't do it."

Mr. Ritmanis snorted. "Ha! Zis is difference betveen Latvia and America! In Latvia, ve leeft him up. Zis how ve sing. Is simple."

This is not good... life the uvula... life the uvula.. it's going to haunt me for the rest of the week trying to figure out HOW TO lift it properly...

mobile phone

i love my mobile phone yet i hate it at the same time. there's no way to say you weren't able to receive a call because mobile phone is mobile and it's supposed to be with you all the time.

i'll sleep, i don't care what happen, so tired now...

health or wisdom?

At 9am, only me and my colleague who's a temp staff is here. The others will come in soon, and they'll stay till after office hours, so that will make up for the slight lateness in reaching the office.

Feeling lazy, and have been drinking coffee everyday. My health must be deteriorating. Can't drink more than one cup of coffee per day, or my hands will kind of start trembling. At first I thought my fingers tremble because I'm hungry, but food doesn't seem to help, rather, the thought of hunger made me eat more. Until my mum asked me how many cups of coffee I took in the office.

There was this question raised in the previous IDAS camp, health or wisdom is the most important, and why? There were other things to choose from as well, but my group was clearly down to these two options only and we can't agree on it. I argued that wisdom is the most important, though I didn't say that those who thought that health is the most important were wrong in their views.

However, there was a particular guy who insisted that health is the most important. Maybe at this point of time I would agree with him. Because feeling unwell doesn't help at all, wisdom just can't prevail! On the other hand, there's another piece of advice, let the body be unwell but not the mind.

I'm not reaching that level yet, my mind and body are still interdependent, hmm... this gives me something to think about... the idea of separating the body from the mind, or the mind from the body... MJ, you know what I am thinking about for our IDAS camp?

my name on google

a quick search on my real name reveals quite a number of hits on google, all because of the forums I have posted to with my name, even one (the only one I'd ever posted) in my university's student forum... i'd better be careful, rule #1 of blogging: do not post on the blog what you would not email to a list of strangers.

from another view, my name seems to be associated with farm equipment as well! :p

hit the high G, I did!

yeah... never thought I could do it!! the seven of us sang together, I might have been a bit pitchy, but then, so what? "min min keong keong" I was able to hit it!! I also "hit" the low D, but sadly not the low C, sound really terrible when I try it again at home. So can consider I'm kinda comfortable with the 2 octave range from low E to high E... what a wonderful feeling...

I'm also a middle C person, so my teacher said - which is considered normal... the more I listen to my own voice, I think I do sound quite childish, compared to the teacher's voice. Now I'm listening to the part on the 33 muscles... use the 33 muscles instead of the 66... you look younger, you sound better!

my colleagues are very hardworking

A tiny office with about 20 staffs, and they work till 7pm, funny though, it doesn't seem stressed, in fact, quite nice to stay here in this quiet after office hours!

I won't get the opportunity to stay back very often, cause my parents would be fetching me sharp at 5.30... I'm still hoping to get myself a car (with approval from my dad)... either he buys it or I won't be able to buy one on my own, not because I have no money, but simply because there's no permission from him...

a perfect melancholic, i am

I'm a perfect melancholic, so says the test results. True, I am too much a perfectionist, and perhaps the programmers are right, should loosen up a bit, be more relaxed, open up...

I got a colleague who is so straight-forward that she told me I look stressed... on my second day of work when I wasn't feeling that stressed up yet. She's a temp staff and don't really care much, but I just can't be like that. I don't like to do things "just enough". Well, I really must learn how to let go...

I am still wondering, how to let go and still make things perfect? I find it difficult to be less perfectionist, I don't know how to!

IDAS camp(thanks MJ for the term.. hehe) is over. Something I'm really proud to be part of. Well, I'll miss the meetings, but then two months before the preparation for the next camp, is not that long, and the people will sure be meeting up anyway, oh... nvm... I'll still be meeting a few of them in the vocal class... :)
