I've heard so many people saying they do not apply what they learned from their varsity days (as in formal education syllabus) in their work. Yet for me, indirectly all the management and marketing theories have been very useful... I mean when you work in an organization and POLCS (planning, organizing, leading, controlling, staffing) are the basic functions, how much can you run from Business Admin? I even find myself searching for text books... phew.. good thing I decided to buy my most of my textbooks from second year onwards, cost me RM60++ per book but.. because I took out the money, I treasured what I bought, I did refer to my textbooks and then I kept it because "mm seh tak" to throw it away... now it's function truely magnifies.. bad thing is I gave away my photostated textbooks... :(
Who would have thought there's a need to refer to the symbols used in flow charts, so that the flow chart looks proper instead of putting in what you thought is the process when there's so many other crucial classification of the different stages in a simple process flow. I even referred to HR textbook because I need to write my own JD.. and I thought that HR would be of no use after I took it in my first semester in uni. I gave away my costing book, and that is costing me now... as I'm supposed to do some cost-benefit analysis.. can do but would have been better if there's a textbook to refer to...
Just a few examples... well... I've spent my time well in uni... studied quite hard and played a bit as well... advice to students (I dont' think there are any students reading my blog though)... most certainly there's a way to apply what you have studied.. if it's not the actual knowledge.. the next best thing to learn is attitude... how you take things whether you like it or not, you still have to do it... blah blah blah... twist your thinking a bit and everything would be of use... nothing is ever wasted...
Another example on twisting your mind from a GM who conducted a session in the training I went to not long after I join the organization... wow... he's a GM and he gave us almost 3 hours, and most of us are fresh grads.. back to what he said:
1. we are getting a free scholarship when we work... the key is to ask, ask, ask... the scholarship is ours to take, the only reason deterring us from getting the scholarship is our own attitude
2. in life nothing is good or bad, you can sell anything if you know how to put things in a different way. e.g. : your objective is to get the client to transit at singpore, and the client is rich.
Option 1: you tell the client he can fly to Australia for RM5000 without transit OR for RM4500 with transit at Singapore. Assuming he is quite rich, he would probably just pay the RM500 and save the trouble of transit.
Option 2: You change your marketing strategy. he pays RM5000 whether he transits or not BUT if he transit at singapore he gets free gift worth RM500
So... he would probably have chosen the transit option for the free gift, despite the hidden fact he's actually paying his own gift, for the hassle he took to transit.

Turtle
"Imagine that the whole earth was covered with water, and a man was to throw a yoke with a hole in it into the water. Blown by the wind, that yoke would drift north, south, east and west. Now, suppose that once in hundred years a blind turtle would rise to the surface. What do you think? Would that turtle put his head through the hole in the yoke as he rose to the surface once in a hundred years?"
"It is unlikely Lord."
"Well, it is just as unlikely that one will be born as a human being; it is just unlikely that a Tathagata, a Noble One, a fully enlightened Buddha should arise in the world; and it is just as unlikely that the Dhamma and discipline of the Tathagata should be taught. But now you have been born as a human being, a Tathagata has arisen and the Dhamma has been taught. Therefore, strive to realize the Four Noble Truths."
